After years of procrastinating, I finally stopped by Oakville Mercedes-Benz to see my friend Steve Jones and take him up on his offer to go out on a test drive in one of his cars. I have no idea why I took so long to get around to it, but after today’s trip – it won’t be long before I’m back at his door begging for another test drive!! I let Steve chose the car, because after all who would better know about them than a top salesman and AMG Specialist?
Based on the same platform as the Fusion, the Lincoln MKZ is night-and-day different. With Lincoln’s Concierge Service thrown in – what’s not to love? The grill is interesting and according to Lincoln designers it’s supposed to evoke the look of ‘ a bird’s wings’ I suppose they’ve accomplished that. For what I used to consider an “older” guy’s car, I have to report – THIS Lincoln is not your father’s car, and I think if Ford could get more people to drive this one, they’d make some serious in-roads on the mid-size luxury car market. Ford recently announced they were ploughing $5 billion into making Lincoln a true player in the near-luxury and luxury market.
My love affair with Jaguar cars goes way back to when I was knee-high to a grasshopper… I have vivid memories in 1971 of playing in my uncle’s 1950’s era Mark 2 Jag – thrilled at the time to even be in the presence of it! I can still remember the smell of the leather and the details of that car today. A few years later I got the opportunity to sit in the infamous Jaguar E-Type at a car dealership while my parents were shopping for a new car. I can still remember the pale-yellow convertible that The Daily Telegraph newspaper includes in a list of the world’s “100 most beautiful cars” of all time. Only 8,626 of those beauties were ever made and I got to sit in one – what a thrill! A number of years ago my wife and I got a surprise invitation from BMW to test their new 5-series against several competitive cars – the Jaguar S-Type was among the choices and I immediately grabbed the keys to that. …
