Nissan Unveils The New 2021 Armada And 2021 Kicks

NASHVILLE, Tenn./Mississauga, Ont. [2020/12/08] – In May, Nissan announced its global transformation plan called Nissan NEXT. As part of the extensive business, cultural and product plan, the company promised 10 new vehicle reveals in 20 months – with six new vehicles in Canadian showrooms by the end of 2021. Today, Nissan took a big step forward toward delivering that goal with the preview today of the 2021 Armada full-size SUV and 2021 Kicks compact crossover. As a result, a full 80 percent of Nissan’s SUV/crossover lineup will be new or renewed in the calendar year 2021.

The Nissan LEAF has been around since the 2010 model year. It got a complete makeover from top to bottom last year and alongside the new looks, it also got bigger batteries and a much-improved range – making it far more useful than ever before. Although I’d never driven one, it was firmly on our list as possibly the next car in our driveway when our present lease was up. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one for a week, but now I have. One thing for sure is – it didn’t disappoint.

The first time I saw a Palisade in the flesh (or should I say metal), I wasn’t paying attention and mistook it for an Infiniti QX80. I jumped into the passenger seat and looked around, thoroughly impressed and could see why the QX80 was priced around $96,500. The driver asked what I thought of it, and how much did I think it was worth. I blurted out – around $85-90k. “Nope – $56k fully loaded.” Came the reply. My jaw dropped. $56k for an SUV like this, just oozing luxury?! What a bargain. “Yeah, pretty nice for a Hyundai – right?” Whaddayamean a Hyundai? “It’s a Hyundai Palisade” No way! Gotta get me one for a test ASAP. And so we have it… for a week.

It’s been a couple of years since I last tested a Nissan. They are never at the top of my list of must-drive vehicles and I don’t know why, because every time I drive them I love them. This week I had the opportunity to spend some serious seat time behind the wheel of the Maxima Platinum. I was expecting a decent enough drive, comfort-wise – what I didn’t expect was how much I really loved this car!

Minivans – the most underrated vehicle on the road today. They can hold and transport plenty of stuff and usually plenty of people too – but most people wouldn’t be caught dead in one, let alone buy one! Why is that? Why is an SUV/CUV ‘cool” but a minivan “uncool” – even though they are far superior in every way? Outside of Canada and the U.S., minivans and even smaller minivans are everywhere but we don’t seem to be interested in them. They are far more adaptable and useful than virtually every CUV. Looking at the interior numbers of the 2020 Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon, it’s got more cargo and passenger room than a Ford Explorer!

Having driven all of the Edge models to date, I thought it was time to give the latest version a drive – after all, it’s been 3+ years since I last drove one (2016) – is it better? It’s been “upgraded” after receiving a mid-cycle facelift for 2019 (2nd gen began in 2015). Last time out I drove the Sport version with a 2.7L Ecoboost V6. This time we’ll be driving the 4-cylinder 2.0 turbocharged Ecoboost engine that is now standard across the range – except for the ST version (the only model that gives you the V6 if you just have to have one). The big question is – does a 4-banger work in a vehicle this big??! Well Ford aren’t alone in this category – Land Rover do the same thing with the Discovery Sport and Kia likewise with the Sorento. I’ve driven both and to be honest I didn’t feel they lacked anything in the way of power by going with a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine.
