For the last year or so Hyundai has been on a bit of a tear with new models coming out every few months – each one significantly better looking than the model it replaces. The Santa Fe was the first model to get the new treatment followed by a completely new model line-up in the case of the Genesis Coupe and Sedan, followed by the all-new Sonata that has earned numerous awards around the world. More new vehicles are coming in the next few months, but this week’s Road Test is the highly anticipated small CUV, the Tucson.
A number of years ago I drove the Mazda RX-8 and fell in love with it! It was my favourite car for well over a year before another came along and knocked it from the top spot on my list. From that point on I seemed to have a new “favourite” car on a very regular basis. So, what made the RX-8 so great that it held the top spot for so long, yet no other car has been my favourite for any more than a couple of months? If I drove it again today would I be just as enamoured with it, or was it really just a passing fancy? We’re about to find out…..
My wife reminds me every week that I fall in love with a new car every Monday, and she’s right some of the time – but this week was special. I expected to like the IS 350C – I didn’t expect to LOVE it. The week wasn’t all a bed of roses however, there were times when it was a tumultuous relationship and it almost ended in tears – literally.
In 1989 Mazda introduced the MX-5 to the world (or Miata as it was known in North America) and in one fell swoop gave us something we didn’t know was possible – an affordable, reliable and fun-to-drive roadster. Sure, we’ve had fun little, sporty, and even sometimes affordable roadsters in the past… but only in the traditional British and Italian sense… with continual break downs to the extent that the owner also had to learn to be a mechanic!
Our summer quest for a new vehicle continues this week with the Kia Soul 4u SX. Although we drove the Soul a short while ago, we decided to re-visit it as a potential purchase after we saw the SX version at the auto show back in February of this year. I asked Kia if they would be kind enough to let me have it for an extended period of time – 3 weeks to see just how much we would like it. They graciously agreed, but one of my fellow journalists did what we all fear when driving company cars.. he or she got in an accident rendering the vehicle unavailable for yours truly. Fortunately, that gave me the opportunity to drive the Sorento for two weeks and we thoroughly enjoyed that, but this left us with just one week to evaluate the Soul.
It’s been a couple of years since I last drove a RAV4, but to be honest I don’t remember a thing about it… Toyota gave it a redesign with numerous upgrades for the 2009 model year, so I thought I’d give it another go. Other than the re-design, there were two other situations that made it a perfect time to take the RAV4 out for a spin…
